IBERIAN LYNX: THE WORLD’S MOST ENDANGERED CAT
IN SEARCH OF THIS ELUSIVE FELINE. You’ll be met at Malaga Airport from where we head inland to some en route birding at Fuente de Piedra – a vast salt-water lagoon famous for its large numbers of Greater flamingo. We arrive late afternoon at Western Sierra Morena and ”Realm of the Lynx” rural hostelries – exquisitely restored granite and slate cottages, refurbished to the highest standards and set in the hamlet of Azuel near the town of Cardeña, where we will enjoy evening meals in and around the plaza.
This is a specialist tour and we will be using local knowledge, not only that of Sierra-trek guides, but also that of local people who really do have their ear to the ground regarding the whereabouts of this elusive feline. Sierra-trek has been afforded the wonderful opportunity to enter private estates- worthy of mention is the fact that nature tour companies visiting our region and Lynx territory, are normally restricted to public spaces, therefore we would urge you to request information from your tour company about accessibility to private estates when you choose your Lynx tour – you could end up restricted to looking over a fence, roadside! An all to common, but seldom advertised experience.
As a local company with local contacts and networks, we would like to offer you the opportunity to take up optimum vantage points in some of the finest areas of Mediterranean woodland in the Iberian Peninsular. Sierra Morena is also home to a rich variety of flora, and most noteworthy is this sierra as habitat for an impressive number of other endangered species such as Spanish imperial eagle, Black vulture, and Iberian wolf.
